"Juvenile Cooper's Hawk at Metzger Farm Open Space
This juvenile Cooper's hawk was one of two released at Metzger Farm Open Space on December 18, 2014 by the Birds of Prey organization. Birds of Prey takes care of certain types of birds that have been injured or have lost their parents and will not survive on their own. When the birds can take care of themselves, they are released during the time of year when other birds of their species are in the area. This hawk had been cared for by Birds of Prey since it was small, and this was the first time it had been able to fly in the wild. The bird took a few hours to become oriented to the new world and provided good photo opts during that time. Cooper's hawks primarily eat medium-sized birds such as doves. The hawks fly low, and sometime come up over an obstruction to surprise their prey.
