Alt-Text
Luncheon on the Grass (Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe)
Description
Considered one of the first works of modernism because of its depiction of a recognizable person (Victorine Meurent) as a nude and its representation of an actual event and place as opposed to a mythological story (so common in academic paintings of the time). The work is also modern because of Manet's loose handling of the paint, especially in the background. This work fueled modernist trends through its search for truth and authenticity. Artists that followed had a continued interest in art that called attention to itself with materials or subject matter. Musée d'Orsay
