Description
One Blue Marble Gratitude for Carol Jones of Roots of Motive Power, provider of "Buffalo Springfield," the 7-ton steamroller that was pressed into action at “Roadworks 2022” - San Francisco Center for the Book’s 16th annual Steamroller Printing Festival.

We arrived on Rhode Island Street just in time for poet Nellie Wong to see the steamroller printing of our “personal print,” a linocut inspired by “The Last Hoisan Poets.”

When Carol received her blue marble, she noted that steam was all about the transference of energy. Her observation reminded me of one of Nellie's favorite expressions. “Cheong Hay Poa” means “Long Steam Lady,” a Hoisan-wa phrase that Nellie uses to affectionately to describe loquacious women - including herself!

Located in Willits, CA, Roots of Motive Power began in 1982 as a loosely organized group of friends in the timber industry who shared a love of local history and the antique machinery that shaped it. Their annual Steam-up event is held in September at the Roots facility, when plumes of steam and the shrieks of steam whistles fill the air.  In December, families can head to Willits for the annual Roots Christmas Party, featuring the arrival of Santa on a steam locomotive a la the Polar Express!
