Description
This piece of pie was made as a gift from Hung Liu for Flo’s 75th Birthday. In an email exchange with Flo on November 8, 2013, Hung Liu wrote:

Dear Jiejie,

Have a great celebration! I am so proud of you and honored to be your meimei.

— Meimei from Bowdoin College, Maine

When Flo asked what the price for the work should be, Hung responded, “For you is Free.”

Yes, I made for You, Jiejie! Did you read the fortune? It says “Happy Birthday, Jiejie!” In Chinese.

In 2013, Asian  Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) presented “75: Flo Oy Wong . . . The Whole Pie,” a celebration of the seventy fifth birthday of artist Flo Oy Wong.  The exhibition, curated by Pamela Wu Kochiyama, Darryl Smith, and Laurie Lazer of the Luggage Store Gallery, opened on November 8th and closed on December 28th, with an opening reception with the artist from 6 – 8 pm on November 8th.

For the exhibition, Flo invited 75 local, regional and national artists to contribute art pies.  All of these works created by Wong and the invited artists share a common thread.  They are narratives which either address the deconstruction of a stereotype or tell the stories of under-represented men and women whose lives and hard work have made a significant yet unknown difference in this country.
