Description
Title: Julian Swung from Tree to Tree
Ingredients: Felted wool, wire, glass beads, string

Amy writes, “My pie was inspired by the story of Julian Bilecki, a man who as a teenager in Poland during WWII helped his family conceal 23 Jews in a hidden bunker on their property. So as not to alert the Nazis to their location with footprints in the snow, Julian would swing thru the tree branches to deliver food to those in hiding. While I was deeply moved by this story, it especially struck a cord with Kiran, who was a teenager at the time and Julian’s act of teenage bravery really resonated with him. It’s a testament that all of us can find ways to be heroes.” https://www.nytimes.com/1998/12/10/nyregion/pole-70-reunited-with-jews-he-saved.html

In 2013, Asian  Pacific Islander Cultural Center (APICC) presented “75: Flo Oy Wong . . . The Whole Pie,” a celebration of the seventy fifth birthday of artist Flo Oy Wong.  The exhibition, curated by Pamela Wu Kochiyama, Darryl Smith, and Laurie Lazer of the Luggage Store Gallery, opened on November 8th and closed on December 28th, with an opening reception with the artist from 6 – 8 pm on November 8th.

For the exhibition, Flo invited 75 local, regional and national artists to contribute art pies.  All of these works created by Wong and the invited artists share a common thread.  They are narratives which either address the deconstruction of a stereotype or tell the stories of under-represented men and women whose lives and hard work have made a significant yet unknown difference in this country.
