Description
We made baker's clay this winter morning! It's good to get tiny hands
busy with dough on mornings when we want to stay cozy indoors. The other
day I thought, "What will I do with all these icing tips?"
Turns out they make beautiful patterns in our baker's clay creations!
Stuck inside with small children getting squirrelier by the minute, ArtsEd4All advocate Andi Wong sent me a well-timed recipe for Ruth Asawa's Baker's Clay and we got to work mixing the dough, making it soft and pliable with our hands, molding shapes into sculptures, baking them, and painting them. It's been a love letter to process, accessible for the very young and equally delightful for the grown-ups.
It also sent me looking more closely at Ruth Asawa's work. Her wire sculptures reminded me of my pal Amanda McCavour so I sent her a link and she sent me back this photo of Ruth with her kids. It's this layered crosssection of artist-wife-mother that I can't stop thinking about these days.
