threading together places with coins
Description
a fun way of exploring and documenting intersections of place - we are combining coins from different places in to a single "document" and making records (rubbings) of each surface of the coins. we then annotate these rubbings with our notes to help guide our memories back to what we are learning!

this particular picture is my document that I made yesterday. I found an old TTC transit token tucked away and thought that would be fun since they haven't been minted for years now, as a result of the mass adoption of Presto cards.

after I made the rubbing of the token, I thought it would be fun to pair with another coin that might hardly ever find themselves as companions in the same pocket.

the 2 Kč coin in my mystery coin cache caught my attention. Part of my heart belongs in the town Plzeň because my grandfather gave me some centuries old Czech songbooks that had been given to him during a visit to Plzeň town in the 90's.

a few years after he died, I had the chance to visit the town of Plzeň in 2007. during the visit I got very sick and had to go to the doctor, whose office was in an old sanitorium. The doctor greeted me in english and asked me where I was from. Toronto - I said. He got very excited - "I went to school in Toronto!"

at the end of the visit, he refused to take my cash and wished me luck instead. As I left he was smiling to himself as he dipped back into memories of his time in Toronto.

this coin is likely from that trip.
