Description
The Fletcher Flair was a prototype amphibious vehicle designed and
created by Wendell Fletcher of Fletcher Aviation in 1953. The US
Government had issued a solicitation for bids to build an amphibious
vehicle based on the VW Schwimmwagen used by Germany in WWII. The all
aluminum Fletcher design was powered by a 4-cylinder Porsche 356
drivetrain, modified to make it a four-wheel drive. The company hoped to
sell the vehicle to the US Army but the vehicle performed poorly in the
water and the Army passed on producing it. This image also shows a
Porsche 911 prototype parked to the right of the Fletcher.
